ArcFlash Hazard Analysis Procedures

When performing ArcFlash Hazard Analysis, a safety auditor collects data about the power distribution of a power facility.

What data should be collected:

  • A one-line drawing of all components with nameplate specifications of every device
  • Details of the lengths and cross section area of all cables
  • Utility information including the minimum and maximum fault currents that can be expected at the entrance to the facility

Once the above data has been collected, a short circuit analysis should be performed, followed by a coordination study. All the data is then processed into NFPA 70E-2000 or IEEE Standard 1584-2002 equations, which produce the required arc flash protection boundary distances and incident energy requirements.
