Sharing Arc Flash PPE during COVID-19 Pandemic

During the first few months of 2020 we have been made very aware of the fact that there is a virus present and it’s spreading rampantly through society. Wash your hands has become a slogan as the World Health Organisation warns us that the virus is spread by contact.

What then about your Arc Flash PPE? Although no extensive studies have been done on clothing or fabric, there has been studies done on other surfaces. Bruce Y. Lee from Forbes reports that according to an article in The New England Journal of Medicine, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) (formerly called HCoV-19), remains detectable on copper up to four hours, cardboard up to 24 hours and plastic and stainless steel up to 72 hours. Cardboard being closest in characteristics to fabric as both consists of fibres that can absorb moisture.

All our manufacturers recommend that clothing is not to be shared between operators for example where one shift operator using a switching suit returns the suit to a storage cupboard and the next shift operator uses the same suit in the next shift. The ideal is for every operator to have their own garments but where sharing cannot be avoided, the garments have to be washed according to manufacturer instructions or qualified laundry service, to avoid the spread of the virus.
